National Skills Academy
National Skills Academies have been, or are to be, established in each of the major industry sectors as a means of providing leadership and creating a culture of world class skill development in UK industry. One of the first to become operational was the National Skills Academy for Manufacturing which was launched in January 2007.
The National Skills Academy for Manufacturing was set up to assist the sector to increase the skills of its workforce and ensure that appropriate quality training is available.
Databuild explored the skills shortage in composites and in particular to:
- Establish how the skills gap has arisen
- Determine the level of skills required and where they are required
- Identify and evaluate current provision for skills in this area
- Explore possible solutions for improving skills in the industry immediately and for the future, and the anticipated take up of such solutions.
The work was carried out in two phases to enable the Academy to receive regular updates on the messages coming out of the research and steer the process to meet their priorities.
Phase one was a small-scale qualitative survey that obtained an overview of the skills required by the manufacturing sector to work with composites, and the availability of training to acquire these skills.
Phase two of the work provided quantifiable data on the size and nature of the training needs of the automotive and marine sectors in relation to the use of composite materials.
